Through research, patient care, education & training and valorization, Amsterdam UMC plays an important role in improving healthcare. As a knowledge institute, we work to improve people’s health – now and in the future. We gain knowledge through our scientific research, pass it on through education & training, apply it in our patient care and make it easily applicable through valorization.

With over 16,500 employees and 5,000 students, we’re working towards a future where disease is increasingly preventable, care remains accessible and patients receive the right treatment. We do this by fulfilling our core tasks:
Research: Amsterdam UMC drives groundbreaking research that pushes the boundaries of medical science. With eight research institutes and a scientific output that rivals the world’s leading scientific institutions, we ensure that our discoveries create value for society.
Patient care: Amsterdam UMC focuses on providing effective, high-quality and, compassionate care, tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Together with our many partners, we’re committed to improving tomorrow’s healthcare, providing care in a region that’s home to 4 million people and 180 nationalities.
Education & training: We train current and future healthcare professionals, giving them the knowledge and skills they need to navigate a changing world. With two medical faculties, a state-of-the-art skills center and close ties with both of Amsterdam’s universities of applied sciences, our students have access to the best possible resources.
Valorization: Our knowledge, research and innovations benefit individual as well as collective health. Through our expertise and care, we also aim to demonstrably improve global health, which we do by applying our knowledge even more effectively, and by expanding and sharing it with each other and the outside world.
Our work is guided by three core values: caring, proactive, inquisitive. This means that we treat our patients and each other with care, and that we are eager to innovate and learn new things.
Amsterdam UMC has deep historical roots in the city of Amsterdam, a bustling metropolis known for its diversity and international orientation. The region is home to many healthcare providers and leading national and international research institutes, many of which we work closely together with.
Amsterdam’s long-standing reputation as a free-spirited and social city is reflected in our organizational culture. We’re passionate about our work and proud of the quality of our care, and we never stop evolving and innovating. We also like to explore new path. Our drive to improve tomorrow’s healthcare is reflected within each of our core tasks.
The merger that created Amsterdam UMC allowed us to pool our knowledge and resources, giving us a strong foundation to contribute to a healthy future. What’s more, Amsterdam UMC is affiliated with two universities with a strong social orientation and an excellent international position: Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam. All of this allows us to address the major challenges facing our society in terms of redesigning our healthcare system and improving health. In the coming years, our organization will play an active role in this.

Where do we want to be in 2030? What does this mean for our colleagues, our content and our role? This multi-year strategy provides guidance as we make decisions about the future of our organization. For some of our ambitions, extra effort is needed: our four ‘impulses.’ Healthcare is going to change – that’s a fact. But we don’t yet know what these changes will look like. This means we have to remain agile and gradually recalibrate our strategy in response to new developments.
