Core activities
Patient care, education and training, research and valorisation are Amsterdam UMC’s core tasks. The focus on gathering and imparting knowledge about health and promoting it is a common thread uniting these tasks.
Education and training programmes
At Amsterdam UMC, changes in society and technology are at the heart of the education and training programmes we provide for the healthcare of the future. With regional, national and international educational partners, as well as healthcare and research institutions, Amsterdam UMC provides a state-of-the-art and inspiring learning environment with an international focus. We encourage professionals in the healthcare sector with ambitions in patient care, education or science to engage in lifelong learning.
Scientific research
Amsterdam UMC is developing scientific knowledge that helps to prevent illness and heal patients. As a university medical centre, we support cutting-edge fundamental, translational, clinical and healthcare research, in conjunction with our other core tasks of patient care and education and training. Amsterdam UMC’s research is organised within 10 divisions and sub-departments and is embedded by theme in eight research institutes.
Patient care
Amsterdam UMC provides high-quality patient care for current and future generations. The bulk of the care we provide is specialist, complex patient care involving special and complicated diagnostics and treatment. Our centres of expertise offer a high concentration of expertise, focused on a specific field of medicine, and deliver care in an interdisciplinary manner in order to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients.
To keep care accessible, affordable and of high quality, Amsterdam UMC focuses on appropriate care: care that meets patients’ wishes and needs and has been proven to be effective and efficient.
Attention is also paid to the well-being of healthcare professionals. Patients are actively involved in improving care, and we make continuous efforts to improve the quality and safety of care and to make more efficient use of healthcare capacity.
Valorisation
Valorisation focuses on converting knowledge and expertise into practical applications for society, with the emphasis on societal impact and public health. The year 2025 marks a clear turning point in the development of valorisation at Amsterdam UMC. Whilst in previous years the emphasis was on positioning and policy-making, the focus in 2025 was on implementation, institutionalisation and demonstrable impact.
