What makes us unique? That is the question we put to our employees, our patients, our partners in healthcare, education and research, an insurance provider and a city councillor. The responses varied, according to the respondent’s own role and perspective. ‘Our strength is in our human capital. In our expertise. And in recognising opportunities.’
our strength
Amsterdam UMC offers its nurses an interesting and challenging working environment, and there are plenty of opportunities here to develop and to grow. That is especially attractive to young professionals.
Whenever someone comes up with a good idea, we always explore ways to put it into practice. Everyone’s contribution is appreciated. There’s a place for everyone at Amsterdam UMC; diversity is welcome.
We recognise the importance of our profession within the organisation, and we are keen to help shape the new strategy. This enthusiasm is not limited to the heads of department – the people ‘on the ground’ are just as ready to contribute. We would like to see the organisation make the shift from medical-centred to care-centred, and for it to become the norm to include nurses in decision making.’
- the Nursing Advisory Council (Verpleegkundige Advies Raad, VAR)
the Works Council: ‘We are an academic centre that benefits from diversity, inclusion and equality, values employees and encourages their development. We can rely on the strength and the knowledge of our employees.’
- the Works Council
the medical specialists: ‘We work on a large scale, and that means that we make a difference: in quality of care, in innovation. We can direct the focus of our healthcare.’
- Donald van der Peet, Chair, on behalf of the Academic Staff Assembly (Stafconvent)
the patients: ‘A place where care is improved for children.’
- Children’s Advisory Council (KinderAdviesRaad), Emma Children’s Hospital (Emma Kinderziekenhuis)
the UMC: ‘Amsterdam UMC really invests in relationships in the region and is in a strong position in the region. It’s a collaborative organisation.’
- Douwe Biesma, Chair of the Board of Directors, LUMC
How others see our strength
‘We would like to see the organisation make the shift from being medical-centred to care-centred.’
the nurses:
‘An interesting and challenging working environment’
‘We see that patients often have a long-term, positive relationship with their attending physician. For us, the core of our strength lies in our multidisciplinary approach to care. The complex problems we see in our tertiary care centre require effective coordination between different disciplines, and we can see that this is working well.
We have a lot of expertise within our organisation. The research done here is linked to relevant, practical issues, so the findings can be used to improve both medical and paramedical care.
the regional partner: ‘Your human capital, culture, ethics, compass – partner hospitals recognise all these qualities. Relationships between people provide an ‘energy boost’ in these difficult times. That will be needed as we face the challenges ahead in healthcare.’
- Marc Seelen, member of the Board of Directors, Flevo Hospital
the insurer: ‘Amsterdam UMC’s strength is its leading role in networks such as OncoNovo+, as chair of the Regional Consultation on Acute Care Chain (ROAZ), as a pioneer of governance in the Acute Care Coalition. And its role in expensive medicines, an area in which Amsterdam UMC has joined forces with other UMCs in the University Hospital Procurement Cooperative.’
- Georgette Fijneman, Chair of the Executive Board, Zilveren Kruis insurance provider
the UMC: ‘The sheer scale of our organisation in tertiary care. This is only possible in a broad ecosystem made up of different but interlinked specialisations, with the flexibility to shift our focus when urgent issues arise.’
- Stefan Sleijfer, Chair/Dean of the Executive Board, Erasmus MC
our partner in research: ‘Amsterdam UMC is especially good at scientific research. I see that in the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and other funds: Amsterdam UMC gets more than its fair share of grants. In terms of research, the merger is well managed and successful, and the bottom-up sustainability movement is another good example.’
- Marcel Levi, Chair of the Executive Board, Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research
the local authority: ‘The strength of Amsterdam UMC: an academic training centre in Amsterdam that conducts socially relevant research into a range of issues, including a healthy living environment. And acute care: that may not be within our remit, but we do check to make sure the people of Amsterdam have good services.’
- Alexander Scholtes, Amsterdam City Councillor with portfolios including Healthcare
