Step by step
to a new strategy
Formulating a new strategy for the future of Amsterdam UMC will not happen overnight. It is an intensive process, in which everyone who works at Amsterdam UMC is represented and heard. But what are the steps in the development process? Who are the people working on it behind the scenes? And what has been discussed where? Our colleagues from the Strategy Development core team will get you up to speed.

Strategy & Innovation advisor and project leader of strategy development
“Talking with our partners”
“What are our strengths, what are our opportunities, which choices need to be made? Those were the questions we put to our stakeholders within and outside Amsterdam UMC last year, from our employees and our patients, to our partners in healthcare, education and research, an insurance provider, and an Amsterdam city councillor. Everyone responded based on their own perspective. The conversations resulted in important points of reference to continue the strategy development. These have been outlined in the first edition of NOWmagazine.”
Floor van de Wolfshaar
Strategy & Innovation advisor
“Learning from colleagues”
“The multi-year strategy belongs to us all. We invite all colleagues to share their thoughts and ideas. Many of them have already let the core team know that they wish to contribute through the online magazine or by email. Based on their own position, or because one of the trends was particularly appealing to them. And that was our intention exactly. We have a lot of expertise within our organisation and all of those perspectives are valuable. Some took part in TrendTalks, others joined expert groups or the focus group.

Communications Director
“Be inspired by prominent speakers”
“On the topics of 6 current social trends, we organised TrendTalks. We did this in cooperation with colleagues with expert knowledge in these areas. Twenty inspiring speakers from within and outside healthcare gave speeches which were concluded by discussions with the audience. The recordings of all TrendTalks and the speakers’ presentations are available on Tulpintranet. The questions and dilemmas from the TrendTalks were further explored during expert sessions.”
Viola Brouwer
director of the EvA Service Centre
“Promoting strategic thinking”
“Managers were invited to attend the ‘Phoenix Encounters’: 4 thought-provoking workshops aiming to promote strategic thinking across the organisation. To be successful in an ever-changing world, we constantly need to adapt and be prepared for what we might be facing. During these sessions, we figuratively ‘burned down’ Amsterdam UMC, so the organisation could arise like a phoenix from the ashes. A fascinating way of thinking about our unique strength and how future-proof we are. We concluded with the question of how strategic thinking can be embedded in the organisation.”
Eva van de Korput
Strategy & Innovation adviser
“Brainstorming
with experts”
“The broad outlines that emerged from the process were summarised in 7 themes, which were further explored during the expert sessions held in April and May. Two sessions were organised around each theme, in cooperation with experts from the various levels of the organisation and based on our four core tasks. The result was a position that will be discussed with the executive board and divisional chairpersons.”
These are the themes of the expert sessions:
Working differently: work processes and digitisation
Labour market developments: employer of the future
Digitisation and technology
Sustainability
International Cooperation & Global Health
Prevention, differences in health and appropriate care
Regional and national cooperation

“Making choices with all colleagues”
“From June 17-20, the ball is in the court of all of our colleagues, and the ideas from the previous sessions will be shared and used to continue the process. The executive board and our core team will also drop by all departments and teams. The time has come for everyone at Amsterdam UMC to give their opinion on the themes for the new strategy and share what is most important to them. What do you think we should focus on? What does your Amsterdam UMC of the future look like? We’d love to hear from you!
Tessa Nolst Trenité
director of Strategy & Innovation
“Making decisions and determining lines”
“During the two-day Strategy event, all of the input from the preceding phases will come together. We will be taking decisive action with around 200 guests representing all target groups within Amsterdam UMC, and determine our positioning for the coming years, as well as setting the major strategic lines and associated choices, priorities and measurable focus. We will use the outcomes to work on finalising the strategy in the coming months.”
Hans van Goudoever
Chair of the Executive Board
“Being ready for an unknown future”
“The new multi-year strategy will provide a firm basis with clear objectives, a profile, priorities and focus. At the same time we want to be agile and able to switch gears when required due to changing circumstances. This also requires learning in practice and scaling up successful initiatives. Arriving at this multi-year strategy is a complex process. We want to include the perspectives of all groups within our organisation. We are very grateful that so many of our colleagues are willing to help us brainstorm and give feedback for a future-proof Amsterdam UMC.”
